Do a full home inventory of your home and update it annually. You can use this free, home inventory list printable to get the job done.
It's a good idea to take photos or a video to back up the information in your inventory list. I also recommend taking photos of any unique features/amenities in your home, so you'll have those photos to show your insurance agent, should you ever need to file a claim.
Locate receipts for all of your big-ticket items, and keep them with your inventory list. If you don't like hanging on to paper receipts, take photos and load them to the cloud. Serial numbers are important too, so don't forget to add those to your inventory list. If any of your electronics are stolen, this will help police to identify your property.

02Secure Your Home Inventory List
Make multiple copies of your home inventory list so that you can keep them in more than one location. I recommend keeping one at home (on your computer, in your fire safe, etc.), one off-site (in a safety deposit box, in a friend's fire safe, etc.) and one on the cloud. Don't make the mistake of keeping a single copy in your home. If something happens to your home, you'll lose your inventory list, too.
Once you have everything finalized, make an appointment with your insurance agent to go over your policy and make sure you still have enough coverage. If you've amassed a collection of art or jewelry, for example, it may be time to purchase a rider or to increase the amount of an existing rider.
Printable Home Inventory List
Insuring the contents of your home is important. Just as important is keeping a detailed record of everything that you own. Should you ever need to file a claim, the insurance adjuster will expect you to submit a list of all damaged belongings, complete with purchase dates, purchase prices, brand names, model numbers, receipts, and photos. If you can't provide this information, your claim may be denied, and that's not what you've been paying those hefty premiums for!
